The name Pasadena is from the Chippewa language and it literally means "of the valley." Most Pasadenans, however - justly proud of their fair city - also say that it means "Crown of the Valley." Whether linguistically accurate or not, it is certainly a phrase that well describes the prominent position that Pasadena has long been enjoying in the area.
With seven closely neighboring cities - South Pasadena, Arcadia, Glendale, La Cañada Flintridge, Los Angeles, San Marino, and Sierra Madre - Pasadena residents have an even wider array of amenities to choose from. The proximity of major freeways, two airports (the Los Angeles International and Bob Hope Airports), and the MetroGold light rail line makes going to and from the city completely hassle-free.
Within Pasadena itself, residents and visitors can use the Pasadena Area Rapid Transit System (ARTS) to go around the city without a car. There are seven ARTS bus routes with stops in all the residential and commercial districts. For those who for physical reasons can't use regular public transportation, the Dial-A-Ride curb-to-curb service is also available.
Aside from trouble-free transportation, another reason why Pasadena is one of the best places to live in is the beauty and variety of Pasadena homes. Comfortably ensconced in spacious neighborhoods with broad, shady streets, Craftsman-era houses and Spanish-style mansions sit cheek by jowl with bungalows, cottages and condominiums.
Safer than most other cities of the same size, Pasadena homes and neighborhoods are protected from fire and danger by excellent, fully-equipped Fire and Police Departments. Pasadena also operates its own Water and Power Company which doesn't just provide an uninterrupted supply, but also maintains the fiber-optic loop ringing the city.
