Because it "sparkled like a jewel in the sun," Edward V. Emery dubbed Glendale "The Jewel City" back in 1910 and the name has been used ever since. Indeed, it's difficult not to wax poetic over the city's wide, shady avenues and its charming mixture of architectural styles.
The Jewel City is composed of 33 neighborhoods, each with its own distinctive character and history. A number of these are full-service neighborhoods, where commercial areas are within walking distance from residences. The cozy shopping districts of Adams Square, Kenneth Village, Montrose and Sparr Heights, for example, have a full range of services from dry cleaning to doctors' clinics to boutiques - all just a stroll away from nearby homes.
Glendale homes differ from neighborhood to neighborhood. The elevated community of Adams Hill has houses built in the English Cottage, Modernist, Spanish Colonial and Tudor Revival styles; most of which, moreover, benefit from views of the San Rafael Hills and the City Center. Also enjoying great views, the family homes of El Miradero have access to nearby Brand Park which not only has hiking trails leading to the Verdugo Mountains, but also art galleries and a museum.
For those who prefer living downtown, Glendale homes in the City Center come in the forms of Craftsman-era structures and more recently constructed condominiums. Just across the Ventura Freeway, Fremont Park has a mixture of Spanish-style houses and condominiums that are only a few minutes away by foot from nearby Fremont Park. As for those who like to live in seclusion, Somerset, tucked away near the hills and characterized by traditional single-family homes, would be the ideal neighborhood.
Glendale's different neighborhoods offer homebuyers not only an assortment of houses to choose from, but of communities as well. One thing is true of all of Glendale's neighborhoods, however - they all have concerned residents who take care to maintain clean streets and well-kept lawns. .
